What is DCLA!?

We are a collective created by directors for directors.

Our main goal is to create a safe and playful environment where members can improve their craft by working with actors and observing each other's work, fostering mutual learning.

DCLA also facilitates opportunities to build a strong community of directors and actors for future collaborations.

This is a space where we can try new ideas, make mistakes and evolve as storytellers, knowing there is no single "right" way.

How it works?!

Preparation for a session starts weeks before we get together.

Announcement

Sessions are announced via email to everyone in the collective.

Booking

Members book the session online on the Member’s area and check the box “Directing!” if they want to direct a scene.

Casting

A DCLA moderator selects a scene and cast the actors.

An update is sent with the details of the session, including the script, casting and who’s directing.

Session

Joining members get together for a session of directing and feedback

What is a DCLA session?

The collective meets on every last Sunday of the month .

Every director pays $25 per session per person to cover studio rent and snacks.

New comers don't have to pay for their first session.

Each session is led by a moderator who is a director in the collective, and is in charge of facilitating the session.

Before each session

The moderator will pick a short scene which you may or may not recognize. This will be the Scene of The Session.

The moderator will also cast two actors who fit the scene. These will be the Actors of The Session.

Four directors out of the collective will be pre-chosen to direct during each session.

These directors will work their own interpretation of the scene. They will analyze it and prepare to direct actors to perform it .

During the session

In turns, the 4 session members take the stage to direct the actors casted for the scene.

The directors engage with the actors by making real-time adjustments sculpting the scene through their distinctive lens, while the collective watches the process and takes constructive notes.

At the end of each session, a moderator leads a constructive feedback round, encouraging all members to offer both praise and critiques to the directors.
